Like most ball games, cannot and does not have an standardized playing field, and the ability to deal with the different terrains encountered on different courses is a key part of playing. The most common course is 18 holes or nine holes on the course. Each hole contains cups which hold the ball. Every hole in a course is a teeing surface to start from, and putt greens that contain the cup. There are various standard forms of terrain between the tee area and the green, such as the fairway rough (tall grass) and a variety of hazards such as water, rocks or sand-filled bunkers. Each hole is distinctive and has its own layout. The stroke play format is the most widely seen format at all levels, especially at the top levels.
